BEST DOG LIFE EVER

Advice on how to make your dog happy!

Preventing Canine Obesity

Screen Shot 2020-06-25 at 3.19.44 PM.png

“Research” has shown that since The Quarantine has begun, two types of dogs have emerged. Group A - those that are fitter than ever thanks to their CrossFit and FitBit obsessed parents (you know, the ones who have used all of their free time to run miles and miles with their dog); and Group B – those that have been enjoying treats and baking and Netflix just a tad too much. Which is why it’s more important than ever to take proactive steps to keep Fluffy at a healthy weight.

Here are some ways to prevent Quarantine-caused canine obesity:

  • Limit your dog to only one food a day that contains the word “Cheez.”

  • Make vegetables more appealing by drawing faces of squirrels on them with a marker.

  • Carefully cut open a bag of Milk-Bones, replace the treats with baby carrots, and reseal the bag. If your dog is confused, respond, “Huh, I guess they changed the Milk-Bone formula.”

  • Provide clear guidelines for what kind of body type you expect your dog to maintain.

  • Set a good example by scarfing down grass in front of your dog.

  • Dog Fitbit!

  • Some “research” has shown that pressuring pups to lose weight can also lead to obesity, so good luck.

TROUBLE TIMES

Advice Column by our dog Trouble, the resident dogger Fixer

Dear Trouble: Help! The Fireworks, the damn Fireworks, they just won't stop, how can I keep my dog calm?

Dear: "Help! The Fireworks, the damn Fireworks, they just won't stop, how can I keep my dog calm?":

It's not even July yet, but the fireworks are going off each and every night. Fluffy is besides himself with the shakes and howls, and you want to keep him calm but don't know how. Venting about it on facebook and twitter hasn't worked. What to do, what to do?

Screen Shot 2020-06-25 at 3.31.29 PM.png

First off all, be sure your dog is wearing a tag with your phone number, should the fireworks start earlier than usual and he (god forbid) springs loose on a walk. If he does run away, see my column on what to do if your dog runs away. Also now is a good time to check that his collar/harness are tight and secure and don't have any rips.

Screen Shot 2020-06-25 at 3.31.37 PM.png

Second, create a safe haven for Fluffy in your house, wherever it is the most quiet, such as a bathroom, a room with no windows, the basement, or a large closet. Provide your pup with familiar toys and treats, a comfy dog bed, and one of your unwashed shirts that he'll love smelling for comfort. Use a crate if that’s where your dog feels safe, but don't lock it, he should be free to go in and out as he pleases. A white noise machine or loud fan will help too, and if things get particularly loud, stay in there with him, comforting him and telling him it's going to be alright.

Screen Shot 2020-06-25 at 3.31.49 PM.png

Third, you could try to desensitize Fluffy to the sound, by playing firework videos on youtube, quietly at first, and then a little bit louder bit by bit. Give him treats too while you cuddle up listening to the booming and thundering, you never know, he might get used to it. I heard playing "God Save the Queen" helps sometimes.

Last, if it's really bad and your pup is in severe distress, some vets will prescribe anti-anxiety meds which will see you through for some time. But try to sound proof a room in your apartment, and do your walking before it gets dark and the madness begins.

All the best,

Trouble

PS: When you're alone and as far away from your house and dog as possible, be sure to set off at least one personal firework as a tribute to Vulcan, ancient Roman god of fire, or face his wrath. Good luck!

DOG OF THE MONTH

Dr. Charlie Lategan

Screen Shot 2020-06-25 at 3.45.36 PM.png

Dr Charlie Lategan is an American physician and scientist who has served as the chancellor of the National Institute of Physician Scientists. Since February 2016, when he was adopted in Baton Rouge by his wonderful mama Dr Hannah, he has been considered one of the most trusted medical figures in the country. He is also one of the world’s most-cited scientists in popular scientific journals such as the Fibromyalgia Almanac and the Xeljanz Journal.

Born in Louisiana, this precocious Chihuaha captained his high school’s basketball team and graduated first in his class. He attended medical school at Cornell, and then completed his residency in internal medicine at the New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Charlie has been a visiting professor at many medical centers, and has received 50 honorary doctorates from universities in the U.S. and abroad. In his spare time he enjoys Grand Theft Auto 5 and pilates.

Congratulations Charlie for being Dog of the Month!!

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Aurora McCrory

Screen Shot 2020-06-25 at 3.46.39 PM.png

This month our spotlight shines on the fearless and fierce Aurora McCrory, who has bravely continued to work through the Quarantine. She's been walking and taking care of essential worker dogs throughout the summer, and we're all so grateful for her hard work!

Aurora grew up outside of Detroit with three pups and countless cats, always with a huge love for all her furry friends. A recent Acting Conservatory graduate, she has always dreamed of living in NYC —and those dreams came true when she moved here in 2016!

A passionate theatre artist, dog walking has always been her favorite job in between acting gigs, especially because she loves dogs but her building doesn’t allow them. She does have two kitties though - Saki and Tofu, and they are the loves of her life. She’s also a yogi and a self-proclaimed avid literature geek! We're so glad Aurora's on the team, and can’t imagine dogger without her!

TAYLOR'S TRAINING TIP

Screen Shot 2020-06-25 at 3.48.16 PM.png

Got a super-puller on your hands? Proper equipment can make a big difference. Try using a front clip harness or head halter (Freedom Harness or Halti Harness for example). Avoid choke or prong collars as these can cause not only physical damage, such a trachea collapse and breathing problems, but can also lead to more severe behavioral problems. For example, when a dog is wearing a collar that causes choking or pain they can start associating the things they see with that pain. So if they pull on the leash every time they see another dog and they are choked, then they can start associating other dogs with pain and start acting aggressively.

Advice on how to make your dog happy!

Fun Activities to Do With Your Dog in Quarantine

Screen Shot 2020-05-05 at 3.28.04 PM.png

Is your dog bored with all the social distancing? Here are a few of our favorite things to do during the quarantine.

1.Play Games!

No, we’re not talking about playing fuzzy wuzzy Animal Crossing with Fluffy. The new Nintendo game sure is sweet and may occupy Fluffy for hours (the way it does with our kids), but it will not prepare your dog for the Apocalypse. For that, we recommend you and your dog play more educational video games such as Doom, Call of Duty, CS GO, Gears of War, and, if you have a puppy: Fortnite. Your dog will learn how to shoot machine guns and find shotgun ammo, lead elite squads of super soldiers into battle, and build shelter in abandoned cars. Why not combine fun with some practical knowledge for when the world becomes a radioactive hellscape.

2.Find the Treats!

Screen Shot 2020-05-05 at 3.29.24 PM.png

At this point Fluffy knows how to get the peanut butter out of a kong in 2 seconds flat, so why not make things more fun by building a mile-deep, lead-lined subterranean vault where you can both safely live when things really heat up! In the meantime, keep your dog’s mind active by putting some of those tiny little Milkbone biscuits in your fallout shelter’s canned goods stash.

Screen Shot 2020-05-05 at 3.29.33 PM.png

3.Learn New Tricks

It’s been like 79 weeks in Quarantine, and your dog can finally heel, fetch, sit and meerkat. Bravo! You’re ready for the next level of dog training. Why not teach Fluffy how to kneel at that pantheistic alter that you built to appease the god or gods most likely to return to this world with an insatiable wrath? While you’re at it, teach him to pray, sing hymns, and read prophecies, because you never know when you’ll need those tricks.

Advice Column by our dog Trouble, the resident dogger Fixer

Dear Trouble: Help! My dog has diarrhea, what should I do?

Dear: "Help! My dog has diarrhea, what should I do?":

So you left out all that banana bread you've been baking to keep busy during the Quarantine, and Fluffy ate it. And now he's got the runs, and it's all over your carpets! What to do!

There's lots of different advice on all the pet sites, but I'll share what has worked best for me, when I have overdone it on the generous leftovers.

White Rice. That's it. For breakfast and dinner for 1-3 days, maybe a splash of chicken broth on top to make it less bland. It works like magic, and better than anything else.

Now, if it's been over 3 days of rice and the condition persists, or Fluffy's very old or has medical conditions - then do call the Vet. If the Vet has you come in, they'll prescribe anti-diarrhea meds and put him on a drip if he's severely dehydrated.

But if not, then you've got this. Don't forget to roll up the carpets and keep the fresh water going.

All the best,

Trouble

DOG (PAIR) OF THE MONTH

Nico & Bear Wertheimer

Screen Shot 2020-05-05 at 3.26.29 PM.png

Beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, swifter than Hermes, and stronger than Hercules, Princess Nico of the Terrace of Windsor fights for justice in this cruel world. A mysterious Anatolian Shepherd (or maybe Kangol) mix, she hails from Azerbaijan where she honed her martial arts skills to become the fearless warrior that she is. Through her endless heroics, Nico has become a beacon of hope to all who find themselves torn between good and evil. A lady of leisure by day, at night she sheds all pretense, dons her cape and takes to the shadowy streets to inflict justice where justice is due.

Nico’s side-kick Bear (an American Bulldog) serves as Nico’s steadfast companion and mentor, as he is both strong and wise, often pushing Nico through the difficult parts of her Grim Crusade. He was found tied to a bench and covered in grease, and then one day the woman fostering him walked past the (amazing) restaurant Werkstatt on Church and Coney Island Avenue. The moment Werkstatt’s owner, chef Thomas, saw Bear, it was love at first sight, and he had no choice but to adopt him. (By the way, they’re open for take out/delivery and the Austrian food is glorious, check it out! The schnitzel is to die for.)

What a happy story. Congratulations on being the Dog (Pair) of the Month, Nico & Bear!

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Tommie Morgan

Screen Shot 2020-05-05 at 3.37.17 PM.png

This month our spotlight shines on the wonderful Tommie Morgan, who fearlessly continues walking our South Slope dogs (who still need service) through the Quarantine. Tommie is a musician and a singer and a totally awesome dude. He always makes us laugh, and has the coolest smooth jazz vibes. (Which is also what he often listens too, because honestly, don’t we all need to listen to more smooth jazz in these times? Rather than, say, murder podcasts).

Originally from Dallas, Tommie moved to New York in ’89 and now lives in South Slope where he focuses on recording his sophomore solo album COPASTETIC (Pancake Studios), as well as vocal coaching and editing books. (And part time dog walking of course). In the past he’s done a myriad of interesting things besides producing and performing music, such as modeling for Ralph Lauren, performing in theaters and podcasts, working for the NYS Board of Elections, and working in a Versace Boutique among other things. He says that the best part of the dog walking gig is: “My four legged buddies let me run songs by them, and they don't howl, run and hide”. We are so happy he’s a part of the dogger pack!

TAYLOR'S TRAINING TIP

Screen Shot 2020-05-05 at 3.38.17 PM.png

Feed your dog all of their meals in a Kong or slow-feed bowl. This provides them with a chewing outlet and good mental stimulation. It’s not only way more fun than eating out of a bowl but can help solve behavior problems that can manifest due to lack of exercise.

DEAR DOGGER PACK!

Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 1.02.07 PM.png

So here we are in Quarantine! For those of you still with us or supporting us, THANK YOU SO MUCH, IT MEANS THE WORLD! For those of you on a break, don't worry, we'll keep in touch, and hopefully this too shall pass, as they say.

Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 1.05.54 PM.png

Besides, guess what, your pet has been secretly Zooming and "Remote Learning" with us anyway! Yes, there are still some things to work out - complex nap schedules, finding the right balance of naps and screen time, and Zoombombing (I see you Donut).

But we are doing it, and all the pets are living their best life. Last week the dogs studied the Science of Garbage and the History of Armageddon. This week the focus includes the Tiger King and Sounds that Dogs Make, among many other very useful subjects.

How to cheer up your Human during the Quarantine: Tips for the Dogs

By special Husky guest columnist Arya and Ghost

Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 1.18.46 PM.png

Dear Fluffy. Your people are home all day, you're never alone anymore, and you get tons of treats, walks, hugs, and scratchies. You're literally living your best life. Awesome!

But, you've noticed your human is a little bit down. Here's some things you can do to get them out of their funk:

  1. Lock them out of the house so they can play “burglar”, when they step out for their package. So fun!

  2. Start howling as loud as you can when they’re on a business Zoom, then climb into their lap and fart

  3. Put black panty hose on your head and jump into their shower with a knife in your jaws; they love those kinds of ninja surprises

  4. Spike their coffee with Meth and make them watch Tiger King

  5. Counter-surf like there's no tomorrow (which might be the case). Eat all those dinners they're cooking, it'll keep them busy and they'll have less time to ruminate on the End Times.

Last but not least, remind them that you love them, and everything is going to be alright! If that doesn't work, then now is the time to show them that secret Apocalypse bunker that you dug up under the couch. Good luck!

Arya & Ghost

TROUBLE TIMES

Screen Shot 2020-02-05 at 11.01.25 AM.png

Advice Column by our dog Trouble, the resident dogger Fixer

Dear Trouble: Help! My dog just bit me, what should I do?

Dear: "Help! My dog just bit me, what should I do?":

So the Quarantine is making everyone a bit stir crazy, and that "Matador" game that started out as "fun" got a bit out of hand. Fluffy bit you, you're bleeding, and now what?

Quick, grab a clean bandage or towel, wrap it around your bite, and apply pressure. If blood soaks the towel and keeps spurting after a few minutes, you're gonna need stitches. Got to the ER asap.*

If there's no gushing and the wound is fairly small and shallow, then don't panic, you can stay home. As long as you clean the wound thoroughly and right away, you will not get an infection. (And you know your dog's been updated on his shots).

Hold your wound under running warm water for at least 5 minutes. Wash it with soap if you can bare it. Better yet, if you have a clean syringe (like one of those you use to give kids liquid medicine), fill it and flush the wound properly several times. Dog mouths are dirty so the most important thing you need to do is flush the wound. Then apply neosporin, a bandage, and you're good to go, no need to panic. (Basia's been bit a bunch of times and she did this and never got infected). Good luck!

All the best,

Trouble

DISCLAIMER: I am not a real medical professional, I am just a dog with a free advice column. But you can look this up on pets.webmd.com and it will tell you the same thing.

*ER: in normal times, the ER will give you pain killers, antibiotics, flush the wound and stitch it up. They might even put you under if it's really bad. During the pandemic, a doctor client told us they are still doing that, while trying to keep normal patients separate from the corona patients.

DOG OF THE MONTH

Ollie Blosveren

Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 1.27.13 PM.png

His followers refer to him as the “Precious Protector” “Wish- Fulfilling Jewel” and “the Presence.” His wikipedia page describes him as "The Chosen One" who is here to teach dharma and serve humanity. The press calls him “His Holiness, the Ollie Lama”. But Ollie Blosveren just describes himself as a Golden Doodle. Born in July 2015 to a simple farming family in a small hamlet in Lancaster County, PA, at the age of 3 months Ollie was recognized as the reincarnation of the previous Spiritual Leader of the World, Fluffy Lama (a border collie, RIP).

Ollie is also dogger’s first full-time client! It’s been an honor to watch him grow and become the sophisticated thinker and compassionate savior that he has become. (Especially during these crazy times). One whose paws remain firmly on the ground, a trait often obscured by his broken English. We just love him so much! His interests include cosmology, neurobiology, quantum physics and balls. With his all American golden boy looks, he also has a lucrative side-gig modeling for various other pet service websites. Congratulations Ollie for being Dog of the Month!!!

Johanna B.

Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 1.28.57 PM.png

Johanna joined dogger in October 2019, and we love her because she takes the best and most creative photos, bikes many miles all over town to fill in, can handle the most challenging pups, and most importantly, she gives all the pets lots of love, safety, and care.

A native New Yorker, Johanna studied Fashion Design at FIT and has worked for companies such as Diane von Furstenberg, Nike, and American Eagle Outfitters.

Before she got her first dog (a tiny chihuahua), ten years ago, Johanna didn’t understand the whole “dog is man’s best friend” thing. Since getting her dog, Johanna slowly but surely became obsessed with all dogs, big and small, young and old. Now she dreams of having a house in the country with as many dogs as possible. But for now, she’s happy to walk as many as she can. She’s also proud that she has convinced several family members and friends to adopt dogs.

TAYLOR'S FUN FACT

Screen Shot 2020-04-06 at 1.30.06 PM.png

Did you know that a dog sneeze can mean other things besides a stuffy nose? Sneezing during play is a signal that communicates friendliness to their doggy (or human) playmate. It’s like they’re saying “hey, I’m just messing around!”

Advice you didn't think you needed to help your dog thrive

How to Help Your Dog Survive March Madness

Screen Shot 2020-03-04 at 11.37.15 AM.png

With March Madness just around the corner, plus all those blood-rageous political debates, threats of a global pandemic, St. Patrick’s Day, Megxit, Lent, Pete Davidson, and the Russians, we here at dogger think that you need to help Fluffy survive all this insanity. But how?

Dog Meditation. That’s right, help Fluffy reduce stress, lower his blood pressure, and reach Nirvana with some nice guided dog meditation.

First, light a candle and make sure he sits in a comfy lotus position, eyes closed, and focusing on his dog breaths. Next run a tap to fill the room with the sounds of water, so that in his mind Fluffy will get carried away like a cherry blossom on a gentle sparkling stream. Then burn some incense and tell him to imagine golden liquid butter slowly filling him up from tail to snout. Once he starts his ascent to the highest pinnacle of bliss, help him float in a serene realm of everlasting tranquility by quietly humming any Cat Stevens song.

After that, give him cheese and Fluffy will be unencumbered by any dog cares, and enter a lotus plane of pure, flawless calm. None of the March Madness will matter, he will be happy, and you will be happy. We promise!

Dear Trouble: Help! My dog just ate my drugs, what should I do?

Dear: "Help! My dog just ate my drugs, what should I do?":

So your Crazy Uncle Leo gave you a tray of pot brownies, and the next thing you know, Fluffy inhaled the whole damn lot. Or, your orange medicine bottle full of your Oxy or Xanax or Adderall or whatever fell out of your medicine cabinet, Fluffy thought it was a toy, he chewed it up and swallowed all the pills. What to do?!?!

If you think it's been more than 20 minutes since they ate the bad stuff, rush them to your vet or the dog ER (Blue Pearl or VERG) where they will get their stomach pumped, and be monitored and treated.

But if you saw Fluffy gobble up the contraband, you have about twenty minutes to make them vomit before the drugs hit their system. We've done this before, it works, here's how you do it:

Get some regular 3% Hydrogen Peroxide from your medicine cabinet, local deli, or drug store. Get an oral medicine syringe. (At the drug store it's usually in the section where baby bottles and binkies are).

Measure out your dosage of the Hydrogen Peroxide into a cup: 1 tablespoon per 15 lbs of dog. So if your tiny schnoodle is only 15 lbs, use 1 tablespoon. If your cavapoo is 30 lbs, use 2 tablespoons. Got a 45 lb hound mix? Use 3 tablespoons. If your dog is over 45 lbs, don't exceed 3 tablespoons.

Suck up the hydrogen peroxide with the oral syringe, and squirt it deep down Fluffy's throat. (You might need some help with holding him down to open up wide). Make sure it all goes down that gullet. Wait about a minute, and then Poof! They'll puke up a bunch of foam, it will look like shaving cream. Then a minute later, they'll vomit again, and this will be the bad stuff in their tummy.

Now, if you're worried, go to your Vet to get them checked out, just in case. But you'll definitely prevent bigger problems if you make your dog vomit before the drugs really hit their system. Remember, you have 20 minutes. Feel free to call us with any questions!

All the best,

Trouble

IN MEMORIUM

Daisy Linda Fegan

Screen Shot 2020-03-04 at 11.21.38 AM.png

Adopted 2/3/18 - 2/20/20

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of the sweet Miss Daisy Fegan. She died peacefully after a brave battle with lymphoma. She was only 9 years old, a gorgeous Redbone Coonhound Mix, and words cannot describe how much we’ll miss her. Daisy was adopted by her beloved mom Allison only 2 years ago in Feb 2018, at the Animal Haven dog shelter. Allison wasn't really looking for any particular breed but as soon as she read Daisy’s story and saw her photo she instantly fell in love. Daisy had been abandoned in icy conditions and no shelter in rural West Virginia on New Year's Day, 2018. She was found shivering and covered in snow.

After coming to live with her new mom, Daisy quickly began building loving relationships with everyone. Even though her previous “owners” abandoned her in the worst conditions, she LOVED all people and was happy about life. She LOVED going to the vet. What dog loves the vet?! She loved her mommy, and she loved her dog friends, especially Coconut and Ollie. She tolerated wearing festive headbands for the holidays, and would howl to ambulance sirens whenever they passed by. And her howl was hysterical - a funny old lady gargle-howl. She loved running free in “her” park (Prospect Park) where she took nice long walks with her mom every weekend. Sometimes they would just sit on a blanket and people watch.

The thing she loved most was SLEEP. Daisy was a professional lounger. And her snoring was glorious, she made incredible sleep sounds, like only hound mixes can. A lover of Starbucks Puppaccinos and car rides, she also enjoyed sleepover parties at the Dogger HQ. There she liked laying on the big blue futon and listening to the delightful dog sounds all around her. She was so GOOD. So pure, with the most amazing loving personality. A real, actual angel.

Daisy will be greatly missed by many, but none more so than her mom. Through thick and thin, she loved her with all her heart, and though the pain she feels without her is great, it in no way would compare to having never had her in her life. On her behalf, please give your dog an extra hug, belly rub, kiss, and treat.

Trudi Rosenblum

A true New York City native, Trudi has been with dogger since 2016, and has been a professional dog walker for 17 years! Think of how many miles she must have walked by now! People pay good money to get that kind of exercise, but for her it’s an awesome lifestyle. Also her building doesn't allow dogs and she really misses having one, that's why she LOVES spending time with all the clients dogs!

In a prior life, Trudi was a magazine journalist, but after having kids (Jeremy and Caroline, who are both in college now) she decided she was happiest being out and about having fun with dogs and cats. Currently she lives in Windsor Terrace with her husband Marty and a fat cat named Jojo.

We couldn't run dogger with out her, she’s a real pet professional, knows the layout of the confusing streets better than anyone, and we’re so lucky to have her!

TAYLOR'S TRAINING TIP

Screen Shot 2020-03-04 at 11.51.59 AM.png

Give them something to sink their teeth into!

Dogs (especially the young ones) have powerful teeth and jaws that require lots of exercise. Make sure to provide your dog with a chewing outlet such as a Nylabone, Beef Bone Marrow Treat, or a Bully Stick. Otherwise, they may get creative and find their own chewables such as your leather couch or Louboutins!

DEAR DOGGER PACK!

Screen Shot 2020-02-10 at 4.59.01 PM.png

We know how much you love your pet, and how you just can't get enough of all pet related news!

So we thought, why not start a monthly dogger newsletter, where we can show you our most popular dog pictures, feature a pet of the month, spotlight an employee, and impart some fun advice. (This month, it's how to make Valentine's Day the best ever for your dog).

And while we're at it, might as well throw in an announcement or two, and answer some frequently asked questions. Also our dog Trouble wanted his own column, so we started that for him too. It's called Trouble Times. Sound good? We hope you like it!

Cheers,

Basia & Ian

FEBRUARY ADVICE

How to make Valentine's Day the Best Ever for your Dog

Screen Shot 2020-02-05 at 11.00.17 AM.png

February 14th is just around the corner, and you want to make it the best day ever for your one and only Fluffy. What can you possibly do to top last year? Here's what we recommend:

1.Have flowers delivered to Fluffy while you’re at work, make sure they’re good flowers, and by that I mean edible and tasting like meat. Might as well make them be meat flowers then. Is that a thing? If not, just roll up some ham and salami slices and tie together with string cheese or sausage casings and voila. If it’s too much work, just throw the meat slices and/or sausages at Fluffy and that’s good enough too.

2.Make dinner reservations well in advance. But if Jean-Georges, Momofuku, or Masa are already booked, just see #1 above.

3.Choose the perfect gift. It must be very expensive, and so unique that you can’t buy it anywhere. How else will Fluffy know you really love them? Like your grandmother’s antique ruby ring, or your great—grandfather’s Rolex. It’ll look nice on Fluffy’s collar, and if you really want to go the extra mile, bedazzle it with some real diamonds or emeralds. Sapphires will work too.

4.If you have to step out for the evening to spend time with someone else (though who could possibly be more worthy?), you can always leave Fluffy at the dogger HQ for an evening or a night. But book early! Their annual Valentine’s soiree fills up quickly and is full of hot canine singles.

5.Do not let St Valentine down on this, or else he will appear, be very angry at you, and will not give you a treat.

TROUBLE TIMES

Screen Shot 2020-02-05 at 11.01.25 AM.png

Advice Column by our dog Trouble, the resident dogger Fixer

Dear Trouble: Help! My dog just ran away, what should I do?

Dear: "Help! My dog just ran away, what should I do?":

I presume you already ran after him, called his name, biked all over the neighborhood asking if anyone saw him, but he's gone and you don't know where he went even though you looked everywhere. You're filled with terror and don't know what to do next.

Here's what you should do:

1. Get on-line ASAP. There’s a very good chance someone helpful picked up your dog and took him home, and is now checking to see if anyone is looking for him.

Go on these sites right away:

shadowapp.com

pawboost.com

fidofinder.com

And see if anyone posted about seeing or finding your missing dog. Report your animal as missing on all of these sites. If someone found or even just saw your pup, they’ll reach out to you. You should also keep checking if anyone posted about finding him.

2. Set up Facebook and Instagram pages for your missing dog, and ask everyone to share. Tag your local dog walking companies asking for help (including us of course). We'll help spread the news. #Hashtag with phrases that are followed by many people in your neighborhood, such as #prospectpark #parkslope #dogsofbrooklyn #parkslopeparents etc.

3. Make a Missing Dog Flyer and put it up on street corners. This will take some time, so do the steps above first. Enlist help.

4. If the police or animal control pick up your dog in Brooklyn, they will bring it to the Animal Care Center at 2336 Linden Boulevard. You can call them at (212) 788-4000, but it's most effective to go there in person. That way you can also leave your flyer with them.

5.Call or visit your local dog shelters to see if anyone brought your dog there. If he's chipped they'll scan him but it might take a few days.

Sean Casey Rescue: (718) 436-5163

BARC Shelter: (718) 486-7489

6. Have someone on the lookout near your house, often dogs come back on their own.

Call us for help. Pray to the Dog Gods. Have Faith. Don't give up.

All the best,

Trouble

PET OF THE MONTH

William White

Screen Shot 2020-02-05 at 11.06.45 AM.png

If you were to cross Prince William (the future King), Walter White (the Breaking Bad anti-hero), and a Pekinese, you’d get William White. And so for his sheer Magnificence and Glory, he gets to be our first Dog of the Month!

His back story is just heartbreaking. He was a street dog in sketchy Los Angeles, barely surviving because both of his hind legs were broken when he got hit by a car. He ended up at a shelter, but no one wanted him for a year because of his injuries. Finally, the heroic MaryGen and Shane adopted him, and now he’s thriving and living his best life in Brooklyn. He has two cat roommates named Ninja and Freddy, and in his spare time enjoys board games, true crime podcasts, cheese, and his pink fluffy bed.

He is also in the process of applying for the newly vacated Younger Prince of England job, because he has questionable teeth and knows how to cut ribbons and knight people. Two Princes named William are better than one!

You can follow him on Instagram @wonderpup_willy

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Taylor Argenbright

Screen Shot 2020-02-05 at 11.07.40 AM.png

Taylor is our General Manager, and she is in charge of all the scheduling, walker training, and problem solving. She is also in the midst of learning to be a Dog Trainer! When she completes her certification, we hope she will stay on as the dogger in-house trainer.

Having moved here from Florida in the summer of ‘16, Taylor leapt into a full walking schedule in record time. She averaged about 100 miles per day in 100 degree heat, going across 5 different neighborhoods, and using every mode of transportation from train to Citibike to bus to scooter to foot. It was amazing and we literally would have died without her.

A talented and classically trained dancer, Taylor has that magical quality of being able to hypnotize the small anxious doggies, the ones who hide under beds and have little freak outs about going out. Though the big scary dogs love her too!

TAYLOR'S TRAINING TIP

Does your puppy know their name?

Is your new puppy not responding to their name? They might not know it! Teach your pup their name by saying it in a cheerful voice to get their attention. When they look at you or come over, say “Good <Puppy Name>” and give them a treat.
